The Costume Institute Gala (otherwise known as the Met Gala), an annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is quite possibly the biggest and most important fashion event of the year. It’s all about the looks: your get-up has got to be fashionable, fabulous, and unforgettable (in a good way that is).
This year didn’t disappoint. The celebration on May 5 honored “America’s First Couturier” Charles James with the theme “Charles James: Beyond Fashion.” Quite opposite of last year’s punk theme, this year called for high-end vintage attire inspired by the ‘40s and ‘50s. Some stars totally rocked it, while others fell a tad short (and by a tad we mean, “What were they thinking?!”).
From the utter failures to the most impressive, we’ve got it all right here. Take a look through our list of the best and worst dressed celebs who attended the ball, and let us know if you agree with the lineup!
Also, make sure to check out the Instagram selfies of your favorite stars before and during the festivities at the end of this post – from Reese Witherspoon and hubby to reunited BFFs T-Swift and Selena Gomez, you’ll love all the candid shots!
1. Sarah Jessica Parker
Sarah Jessica Parker, a co-chair this year, was one of the first to arrive and definitely pulled off the theme in a stunning black-and-white Oscar de la Renta ball gown. The back featured a lattice pattern with the designer’s signature flashed across the bottom of the train. The elbow-length gloves she wore really made the look ultra-sophisticated.
2. Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron, accompanied by boyfriend Sean Penn, looked perfectly polished and strikingly beautiful. She too embraced the black-and-white vibe in a strapless white Dior gown with black ribbon stripes, and draped a tuxedo jacket over her shoulders for an effortless yet completely put together look.
3. Blake Lively
Blake Lively, simply glamorous from head-to-toe, captivated the red carpet. The blonde bombshell wore a curve-hugging yet absolutely dazzling Gucci dress with a plunging neckline.
Rihanna, known to show some skin, did just that. She rocked a Stella McCartney two-piece ensemble featuring a long-sleeve top that cut right below her boobs and left her back completely bare, and the silver choker she paired with it looked like it was made for the outfit. Rihanna just has a way of pulling off this revealing appearance, and we can’t forget to mention her flawless face and sexy up-do that completed the look.
5. Beyoncé and Jay Z
Both Beyoncé and Jay Z donned Givanchy Haute Couture garments, and it totally worked for them. Beyoncé’s spectacular all-black dress was adorned with crystals and studs and worn over a matching bodysuit. She added embroidered fishnets and a netted veil and looked fierce as ever. Of course, we have to mention when Jay Z put a ring on it (again)! Beyoncé lost her ring when it slipped off her finger, and when her heroic hubby came to the rescue, he staged a mock proposal giving us one more reason to love this dynamic duo.
6. Victoria and David Beckham
As always, Victoria kept it classy and simple in an all-white, cropped top dress from her very own collection. David matched her look in a Ralph Lauren suit made up of a white jacket and black pants and bowtie. They make one stylin’ power couple.
1. Lupita Nyong’o
Oh my, we’re really just not sure what to say about Lupita Nyong’o’s flapper girl costume. She took a risk with the emerald-green Prada dress decked out with feathers and beads and a Cartier jeweled headpiece to top it off, but that’s about all we can give her credit for this time around, unfortunately.
2. Rita Ora
British singer-songwriter Rita Ora flashed her undies in an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction, but that’s not what put her on the worst dressed list. Her lacy golden dress was questionable enough as it bared much too much flesh, and coupled with the thigh-high, gladiator heels and strange arm strap, we’re calling this one a miss.
3. Kate Upton
Kate Upton’s ruffled and corseted black dress is sheer in all the wrong places. We hate to say it, but she came off as a cross between Little Bo Beep and a saloon barmaid.
4. Katie Holmes
Katie Holmes resembled Belle of Beauty and the Beast in her mustard yellow gown, only she didn’t quite pull it off like the Disney princess. Too much yellow, too much dress…just, too much.
5. Sandra Lee
Food Network “Semi-Homemade” host Sandra Lee also took a Disney movie cue with her fairy godmother-looking dress, and like Holmes, failed to live up to the part. The puffy tulle and awkwardly giant ruffles at her hips did nothing to flatter her.
6. Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart’s look would have been great for last year’s punk-themed gala, but despite the intricate detailing, we’re afraid she missed the memo on this year’s more formal affair.
7. Kirsten Dunst
Kirsten Dunst’s sci-fi inspired dress by Rodarte leaves us feeling a bit confused overall. Her black gown, which really looked like three different dresses trying (and failing) to mesh together as one, was imprinted with the second Death Star of the Star Wars saga. It certainly turned heads, we’re just not convinced it was in a positive way.
