15 Reasons Why St. Patrick’s Day is Actually the Best Holiday Ever

I confess: St. Patrick’s Day is one of my favorite holidays, so this list may be a teeny bit biased. I’m like a kid on Christmas. Now, being part Irish myself and from a large Irish-American community, we did always celebrate but my love of the holiday and its elevation to favorite status really stems back from high school, when it became an EVENT. Ever since, St. Patrick’s Day (or St. Paddy’s) has become a high point of the year. Of course its not all about the drinking, thought that is a big part of it for many. It’s what a lot of holidays are; getting together with family, friends, having fun, and celebrating Irish culture.

Before we get started though, let’s give it up for St. Patrick, the man behind the holiday.

Despite the number of celebrations both big and small around the entire world, the average person may not know a lot about St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland.  St. Patrick was brought to Ireland as a slave, escaped, converted to Christianity, then returned. The holiday is an observed feast day, though since it occurs during Lent the restrictions on eating and drinking are lifted – one reason why its such a big day for parties. And now I present to you, 15 reasons why St. Patrick’s Day is actually the best holiday ever. Sláinte!

1. Yeah I Know What  I Said About Drinking. However!

Where else can you see marching bands, bagpipers, and revelry unmatched then at a parade? Many American cities with Irish communities have long-standing traditions of celebrating with parades. Manhattan hosts the the oldest. Held since 1762, it  has over 150,000 participants and 2 million spectators. Other cities with big parades are Savannah, Chicago, New Orleans, and of course, Boston.
