Celebrities are basically like royalty. Since America doesn’t have a King or Queen, we need other people to worship. Hollywood is our royal court, and we love all the people that populate it.
It makes sense then, that when two famous people get married, it’s comparable to a royal wedding. Certainly every girl wants to feel like a princess on her special day, but certain celebs actually decided to look and act like one too. While the rest of us peons have to settle for fire hall receptions, celebrities can rent out castles, or yachts, or even entire islands. And since they’ve got the money to do so, why not? Here are some of the most outlandish and ridiculous celebrity weddings that have taken things a little over the top.
1. Prince William and Kate Middleton
Since we started things off comparing celebrities to royalty, let’s get the actual royalty out of the way first. Their wedding day on April 29, 2011, was declared a public holiday in the United Kingdom and involved state carriages as well as roles for the Foot Guards and Household Cavalry. One million people lined the streets between Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace just to catch a glimpse of the couple. Extravagant? Yeah, just a bit.
2. Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban
This couple tied the knot in 2006 and didn’t hold back at all. The big event supposedly had a price tag of $250,000! $20,000 of that budget went into Nicole’s Balenciaga gown and veil, while nearly a third of the money went into party favors. Every guest was given a Tiffany clock engraved with the phrase “A Moment in Time.” Now that would have been one wedding not to skip out on!
3. Michael Jordan and Yvette Prieto
The best basketball player ever married this lovely Cuban-American model on April 27, 2013. The ceremony wasn’t too expensive… only $10 million! It took place at the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach, Florida… the same church where Donald Trump got married at in 2005. Yvette’s gown was made of Swarovski crystals, and Usher and Robin Thicke performed at the reception. Sounds like quite the party.
4. Mariah Carey and Tommy Mottola
While this couple divorced in 1998, their 1993 wedding was certainly not a failure. It was reported to have cost $500,000 and took place at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in New York. Mariah’s Vera Wang gown alone cost $25,000 and was modeled after Princess Diana’s dress. It included a 27-foot-long train. Imagine walking down the aisle with that! Eek.
5. David and Victoria Beckham
David and Victoria went all-out ostentatious by pretending to be a king and queen during their ceremony. They sat on red velvet thrones, wore crowns, and even had trumpeters on hand to announce the arrival of certain guests. The 1999 wedding took place in Luttrellstown Castle in Dublin, and reportedly cost around $800,000… which isn’t too bad compared to the price tag of a real royal wedding.
6. Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell
The third time was the charm for Paul, who didn’t actually spend as much on this wedding as on his previous ones. When he married Heather Mills in 2002, the cost of the ceremony was an estimated 1.5 million pounds, with guests chugging down vintage Cristal and Laurent Perrier that cost 180 pounds a glass. When he married Nancy, he reportedly only spent 50,000 pounds. However, this ceremony was certainly not simple – the wedding cake required two people to carry and was said to have taken weeks to create. Hundreds of fans waited outside the church, and Barbara Walters was there to throw rose petals on the happy couple.
7. Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel
As one of the most anticipated weddings of the year, Justin and Jessica’s 2012 ceremony even made the cover of People magazine. The wedding took place in southern Italy and featured an entire week of festivities for all of their guests, including bicycle rides, parties, and their very own fireworks show. They even booked an entire hotel and had the surrounding buildings closed down so that the paparazzi had nowhere to hide. All of this was just $6.5 million!
8. Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries
For as long as this marriage lasted, it was certainly a spectacle to behold. It happened on August 20, 2011 and was over just 72 days later, but had a high cost of $6 million. The ceremony took place in California and was televised by the E! network. The couple spent nearly $2 million on flowers alone! Other costs included $750,000 for food, $400,000 for Perrier-Jouet champagne, and $10,000 for Lehr & Black wedding invitations.
9. Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky
Nothing is too expensive for the former First Daughter! This couple got hitched at a beautiful New York estate. The biggest item in the budget? Security, which isn’t surprising when your dad is a former President. Other celebrities like Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen were in attendance. Among other expenses was an $11,000 wedding cake and a shiny Vera Wang dress.
10. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes
This scientology-infused wedding happened on November 18, 2006 in a rented medieval castle in Bracciano, Italy. It feared a three day party in Rome with many high profile guests such as Jennifer Lopez, Will Smith, Jim Carrey, and Jenny McCarthy. The reception itself had fireworks, a performance by Andrea Bocelli, a five-tiered wedding cake, and 300 bottles of fine wine. For a price tag of $3.5 million, it was a steal! Unfortunately, the fairy tale ended in 2012 when the couple divorced.
