10 DIY Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

Mother’s Day is right around the corner (May 11th, in case you were wondering!) and you might be trying to come up with something to buy for your mom/wife/grandma etc.  There are many different factors that can make it hard to come up with good Mother’s Day presents – you want it to be meaningful and special, but maybe the person you’re thinking of is one of those “tough to buy for” types.  Or maybe you’re just sick of the same ol’ presents and want to try to find something unique this year.  That’s what makes DIY gifts so great – they’re not just really special to the person receiving the them, but they can be fun to make!  Check out these gift ideas:

1. Gold Gilded Geode Ring

These rings are not just beautiful, but each one is completely unique.  Follow the steps below to make one:

What you’ll need:  

Geode
Ring blank
Liquid gilding
e6000 adhesive
Paintbrush

Instructions:

Step 1. Paint the bottom portion of the geode with the liquid gilding (the bottom is the flattest side.)
Step 2. Add a generous amount of e6000 onto the flat side of the ring blank.
Step 3. Place the the bottom of the geode onto ring blank.  Hold in place for at least 30 seconds.
Step 4.  Place upside down and let dry overnight.

2. Jewelry Holder

Here’s a creative gift – a handmade jewelry holder.  You can customize them however you want!

What you’ll need:

Small ice cream bowl
Tape
Spray paint

Instructions:

Step 1.  Create a pattern using tape.  Make sure tape is pressed down firmly so paint doesn’t leak through.
Step 2.  Clean the glass.
Step 3.  Paint the glass.  Keep paint can 8-10 inches away while spraying it.
Step 4.  Let glass dry completely, then remove tape.
Step 5.  For a two-tone look, tape over the first coat of pain and then spray the rest of it in another color.
Step 6.  Let dry again, then you’re done!

3. Kid’s Art Tea Towel

This is such a fun gift if you’re looking for something to give from a child (perhaps a gift for grandma.)

What you’ll need:

1 white high-quality natural fabric towel.
1 permanent marker
Your child’s artwork

Instructions:

Step 1.  Wash and dry the towel.
Step 2. Place child’s artwork under the towel and trace it with permanent marker.  That’s it!

4. Lovely Salted Caramel Sauce

How about making something decadent for mom?  This caramel sauce will be a delicious treat!

What you’ll need:

1 cup of water
2 cups of sugar
1 cup of heavy cream
1/4 teaspoon of pink Himalayan salt

Instructions:

Step 1:  Pour water into a saucepan and pour sugar into the center, not touching the sides of the pan.  Do not stir!
Step 2:  Heat over medium heat until sugar dissolves.
Step 3:  Turn heat to high until sugar mixture turns golden brown.
Step 4:  After 20 to 30 minutes, it should be done.  Remember, don’t stir!
Step 5:  Slowly whisk in cream.
Step 6:  Continue to boil until it thickens.
Step 7:  Add salt and cool completely.
Step 8:  Scoop into pretty mason jar, add label, and you’re finished!

5.  Pumpkin Spice Sugar Scrub

This sugar scrub almost looks good enough to eat!

What you’ll need:

2 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup white Sugar (or Raw Sugar)
1 teaspoon Cinnamon
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 
1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg
1/3 cup Almond Oil or Coconut Oil (add more if needed)

Instructions:

Step 1. In a medium mixing bowl combine the sugars and spices.
Step 2. Mix together with a wooden spoon.
Step 3. Slowly pour in the Oil and stir until well blended.
Step 4. You may add more if your scrub is too dry.
Step 5. You don’t want it to be runny, just a nice damp texture.
Step 6. Cover in a tight container.
Step 7. Store in the refrigerator up to 8 weeks.

6.  Microwave Caramels

What you’ll need:

1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup light Karo syrup
1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk

Instructions:  

Step 1:  Combine all ingredients.
Step 2:  Cook 6 minutes in microwave stirring every 2 minutes.
Step 3:  Stir and pour into lightly greased baking dish.
Step 4:  Let cool, then cut, wrap in wax paper, and store in air tight container.

7. Nail Care Gift Set

No need for instructions on this one – just buy some cute nail files, some pretty nail polish, and maybe a purse-sized hand lotion and package it in a nice bag for your mom.

8.  Porcelain Pen Art

What you’ll need:

Porcelain pens
An inexpensive white mug

Instructions:

Step 1: Be sure to clean the mugs (or other dishes) before you draw on them!
Step 2: Shake the pen and press the tip down until the ink comes out.
Step 3: Create your masterpiece
Step 4: Wipe away any mistakes
Step 5: Let them dry for 24 hours if you intend to bake them or 72 if you don’t (baking instructions are on the pen).

9. Lucky Penny Vase

An old vase
Pennies
Black spray paint
Glue gun

Instructions: 

Step 1:  Spray paint vase with black paint.  Let dry.
Step 2:  Glue pennies everywhere using hot glue gun.
Step 3:  Add your choice of flowers.  Finished!

10.  Pampering Kit

How about a DIY pampering kit?  Take a pretty box and fill it with items you know your mom will love – her favorite chocolate, skin care products, nail polish, bubble bath, gift card to favorite restaurant or store, etc.  Every woman needs a little pampering now and then!
